Understanding Elodont Dental Dynamics and Malocclusion
Chinchillas have teeth that never stop growing. Their dental health relies entirely on the mechanical attrition caused by grazing. When the upper cheek teeth (maxillary arcade) and lower cheek teeth (mandibular arcade) do not meet correctly, it is identified as dental malocclusion. This misalignment prevents the animal from grinding food, leading to the formation of 'spurs' or sharp points on the edges of the teeth.
The Pathophysiology of Root Elongation and Occlusal Abnormalities
Unlike broken teeth in other species which are traumatic in nature, chinchilla malocclusion is often developmental or dietary. Over time, these spikes pierce the soft tissues of the mouth, causing inflammation similar to stomatitis or gingivitis. If the process continues, the roots can actually invade the eye sockets or the lower jaw bone. This structural failure often creates conditions indistinguishable from chronic periodontal disease in its severity and systemic impact.
Clinical Indicators and Diagnostic Protocols
Veterinarians diagnose this condition through a combination of physical examination and imaging. A standard conscious oral exam is rarely sufficient because the chinchilla's mouth is very small and deep.
Visual Signs of Oral Distress

Advanced Imaging Techniques
To see the full extent of the root structure, a veterinarian will require diagnostic imaging. This often involves skull radiography or computed tomography (CT) scans. This imaging allows the vet to differentiate between simple crown elongation and more complex issues, such as a mandibular fracture caused by weakened bone, or an oral foreign body lodged in the dental arcades.
Therapeutic Approaches and Maintenance
Once diagnosed, the primary treatment involves dental floating—a procedure to file down the elongated teeth. While this provides immediate relief, it is rarely curative for life.
Long-Term Management and Supportive Nutrition
In severe cases, manual correction must be performed under anesthesia. Following the procedure, owners must provide critical care by syringe-feeding high-fiber slurry if the animal is unable to self-feed. Long-term, providing unlimited access to coarse hay is the only way to minimize the frequency of professional dental procedures. Just as tooth resorption changes the approach to feline dental care, chinchilla malocclusion requires a lifelong commitment to monitoring the animal’s body condition and appetite.
