Data & Pricing Methodology

1. Our Transparency Commitment

VetCostIQ exists to make veterinary pricing transparent and accessible. Every price figure shown on this platform carries a visible provenance label so you know exactly where the data came from and how much to trust it. We never present estimated or inferred prices as verified facts.

2. Data Sources

Our pricing data is drawn from the following sources, ranked by confidence level:

• Invoice-Verified: Prices extracted from actual veterinary invoices uploaded by pet owners. These are the highest-confidence data points and carry a green badge throughout the platform.
• Hospital-Published: Prices published directly by a veterinary hospital on their own website or price transparency page. These are marked as hospital-sourced.
• Community-Contributed: Prices reported by pet owners from memory or receipts without a uploaded invoice. Labeled as "Contributed" and treated as lower confidence.
• State Averages: Median, 25th, and 75th percentile benchmarks computed from the aggregated verified price records within a given state. Used for comparison context on hospital profiles.
• Inferred / Estimated: When no real data exists for a hospital, a price may be auto-filled from a national average template based on hospital type. These are always marked with an "Estimated" badge and should be treated as rough ballpark figures only.

3. How We Calculate Benchmarks

State benchmark figures (median, 25th percentile, and 75th percentile) are computed from all verified and contributed price records for a given procedure within a state. We use standard statistical percentile ranking: the median is the middle value when all prices are sorted, the 25th percentile is the price below which 25% of reports fall, and the 75th percentile is the price below which 75% of reports fall. This distribution helps you understand the typical price range and spot outliers. Benchmarks are recalculated periodically as new data arrives.

4. What "Percentile" Means

A percentile tells you where a price falls within the distribution of all reported prices. For example, if the 25th percentile for a wellness exam in your state is $50 and the 75th percentile is $90, it means most reported prices fall between those two figures. A price at the 50th percentile (the median) is the midpoint — half of reported prices are lower, half are higher. Percentiles are more informative than a simple average because they are not skewed by a few extremely high or low prices.

5. Confidence Tiers

Every price record is assigned a confidence tier from 1 (highest) to 4 (lowest): Tier 1 = hospital-published; Tier 2 = invoice-verified from a real visit; Tier 3 = regional/state benchmark; Tier 4 = national average template. You will always see the source type badge alongside any price so you can judge its reliability at a glance.

6. Data Freshness

Each price record carries an observed date. We soft-expire stale records rather than deleting them, so historical context is preserved. Prices older than 12 months are flagged as potentially outdated. Hospital-published prices are re-checked periodically and a "last verified" date is shown when available.

7. Third-Party Data & Credits

Hospital listings (names, addresses, phone numbers, hours, ratings) are sourced from Google Places. Google ratings and review counts are displayed under Google's standard attribution. We do not claim ownership of third-party review data. If we incorporate any licensed benchmark datasets in the future, the required attribution will appear directly alongside that data.

8. Limitations

Pricing data is inherently variable — veterinary costs differ by region, clinic type, pet size, complexity of the case, and individual clinic pricing decisions. Our benchmarks are informational tools for comparison, not guarantees of what you will be charged. Always confirm pricing directly with the hospital before your visit.

9. Contributing Your Data

The more invoices our community shares, the more accurate and comprehensive our benchmarks become. You can upload a veterinary invoice from the "Share a Price" link in the navigation. All contributions are anonymized — your personal information is never attached to public price displays.
