Understanding Feline Calicivirus and Oral Pathogenicity
Feline Calicivirus is one of the most common causes of respiratory infections in cats. It differs from other feline viruses by its specific target sites, primarily the mouth and the respiratory epithelium. Unlike Rabies, which is a fatal neurologic condition, FCV primarily affects quality of life through painful oral lesions and respiratory discomfort.
Clinical Manifestations and Respiratory Symptoms
Owners often notice sudden sneezing, ocular discharge, and a lack of appetite. The presence of painful mouth ulcers is a hallmark sign. These lesions make eating extremely uncomfortable, often leading to secondary dehydration and cachexia. In some kittens, FCV causes transient polyarthritis, manifesting as acute lameness, which can be misdiagnosed as an injury or Otitis Externa (Ear Infection) if the cat is holding its head strangely due to fever.
Virulent Systemic Feline Calicivirus (VS-FCV)
While standard FCV is manageable, certain mutated strains cause Virulent Systemic Feline Calicivirus. This form causes high fever, severe skin lesions, and edema of the face and limbs. It is highly aggressive and carries a high mortality rate compared to standard respiratory strains, sharing some clinical severity with systemic diseases like Canine Distemper in terms of rapid progression.
Diagnosing and Managing Viral Shedding
Veterinarians perform PCR testing or virus isolation to confirm the diagnosis. Because there is no direct antiviral cure, treatment focuses on supportive care: intravenous fluids for dehydration, antibiotics for secondary bacterial pneumonia, and analgesics for oral pain. Vaccinations are critical, though they may not prevent all infection, they significantly reduce the severity of symptoms.
