Percutaneous Larval Penetration

Larvae existing in contaminated soil can actively penetrate the skin of pets, particularly through the soft pads of the feet. This often leads to cutaneous larval migrans or, if ingested during grooming, internal maturation.

Transmammary Transmission

Infected mothers can pass dormant larvae to their offspring through colostrum and milk. This is a common cause of neonatal anemia, which can quickly become fatal if not diagnosed through early veterinary screening.

Oral Ingestion of Infective Larvae

Pets frequently ingest eggs or larvae directly from contaminated environments. Similar to the transmission dynamics seen in Dipylidium infection, the environmental persistence of these parasites requires rigorous sanitation protocols.

Clinical Manifestations and Hemorrhagic Risks

Infections may present as mild gastrointestinal distress or severe systemic collapse. Owners should monitor for pale mucous membranes, which indicate significant blood loss. Other parasites like Aelurostrongylus (Lungworm) share some respiratory overlap, but hookworms are primarily identified by their impact on blood parameters.

Diagnostic Protocols and Laboratory Assessment

Veterinarians utilize fecal flotation techniques to identify characteristic eggs. In cases where egg shedding is intermittent, PCR-based fecal testing may be required. Unlike Cytauxzoonosis, which is a protozoal blood parasite, hookworm anemia is identified through a complete blood count (CBC) showing low packed cell volume (PCV) and regenerative anemia.

Therapeutic Intervention and Deworming Strategies

Treatment involves the administration of anthelmintics such as moxidectin, milbemycin, or pyrantel pamoate. For severe anemia, blood transfusions and supportive fluid therapy are critical. Unlike treatments for skin-based conditions like Sarcoptic Mange, systemic treatment is non-negotiable to prevent organ damage.
