Meningitis represents a critical inflammatory state within the central nervous system. When the protective layers—the meninges—become inflamed, the integrity of the neurological system is compromised. Often, veterinarians encounter this in tandem with Encephalitis, which involves the brain tissue itself. This inflammatory response can be categorized as infectious, where pathogens invade the meninges, or non-infectious, typically categorized as steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA) in dogs.
Anatomical Impacts on the Neuraxis
The inflammation alters cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics. Because the skull is a rigid container, swelling leads to increased intracranial pressure. This pressure impacts the cranial nerves, which may sometimes mimic conditions like Horner Syndrome if the autonomic supply is disrupted, or even Facial Nerve Paralysis depending on the location of the lesions. Distinguishing meningitis from other mimics like Brain Tumor is essential for effective treatment.
Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Recognition

Therapeutic Strategies and Management
