Psittacosis is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. Unlike many other bacterial pathogens, it lives inside the cells of its avian host. This infection is commonly observed in psittacine birds, including parrots, cockatiels, and macaws, although all avian species are susceptible. The bacteria are shed through feces, urine, and eye/nasal discharges. The primary mode of transmission is the inhalation of aerosolized dust containing the organism, which can remain infectious in dried droppings.

Identifying Clinical Signs and Symptomatic Presentations

Birds suffering from psittacosis often display non-specific signs, which complicates early detection. Owners should monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, and changes in fecal consistency.

Respiratory and Ocular Manifestations

Infected birds often exhibit bilateral conjunctivitis, nasal discharge, and labored breathing (dyspnea). These signs are frequently accompanied by sneezing and clicking sounds during respiration, often confused with secondary infections like Avian Candidiasis.

Gastrointestinal and Systemic Indicators

Chronic infections can lead to hepatomegaly (enlarged liver) and splenomegaly. Fecal changes are a hallmark of the disease, with birds often passing lime-green urates or biliverdin-stained feces, which may also be seen in Avian Gastric Yeast infections. Diagnostic Protocols: Beyond the Physical Examination

Veterinarians utilize several modalities to confirm the presence of Chlamydia psittaci. The physical exam focuses on hydration status, body condition score, and auscultation of the air sacs. However, since the symptoms overlap with other conditions such as Ferret Aleutian Disease (in specific mixed-pet households where cross-contamination occurs) or secondary bacterial pneumonias, definitive testing is required.

Laboratory and Serological Testing

The gold standard for diagnosis is PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing of choanal and cloacal swabs. This method detects the genetic material of the bacteria, even in subclinical carriers. Serological testing for antibodies is also used, though results must be interpreted alongside clinical findings. In cases of internal organ damage, radiographs may reveal hepatomegaly or splenic enlargement.

The primary treatment for psittacosis is long-term administration of doxycycline, typically given orally or via injection for a minimum of 45 days. This extended duration is necessary to clear the bacteria from intracellular reservoirs. Supportive care, including fluid therapy and specialized nutrition, is often necessary during the initial phase of treatment to manage secondary infections or dehydration. It is vital that treatment plans are followed strictly; stopping medication prematurely often leads to the development of resistant strains or a return of the infection once stress factors re-emerge.
