Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Pathogenesis and Clinical Forms
Swine Erysipelas is caused by the Gram-positive, non-spore-forming rod bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. This organism is highly resilient in the environment and can persist in soil, water, and manure for extended periods. The disease impacts pigs of all ages, though it is most frequently observed in growers and finishers. While often compared to other respiratory outbreaks like Swine Influenza, Erysipelas is distinct in its systemic progression and targeting of connective tissues.
Acute Septicemic Manifestations
The acute form is the most rapid presentation, where the bacteria infiltrate the circulatory system. This results in high fever (often exceeding 105°F), complete anorexia, and severe lethargy. Affected animals may exhibit a stiff gait and huddle together to maintain heat. In the most severe cases, sudden death occurs before typical skin manifestations can develop.
Cutaneous Diamond Skin Disease
The classic diagnostic hallmark is the emergence of erythematous, rhomboid-shaped skin patches known as 'diamond skin.' These lesions appear as raised, reddened areas that may turn dark purple or necrotic if blood flow is compromised. Unlike the oral lesions seen in Contagious Ecthyma (Orf), these skin lesions are systemic manifestations of localized vasculitis caused by the bacterial toxin.
Diagnostic Procedures and Differential Considerations
Laboratory Isolation and Bacterial Culture
Diagnosis is primarily confirmed through the isolation of the organism from skin swabs, joints, or tissues obtained at necropsy. PCR testing has become increasingly common for rapid identification of the bacterium in herd outbreaks, especially when differentiating from environmental contaminants.
Differential Diagnosis and Mimicry
Clinicians must differentiate Erysipelas from other zoonotic pathogens, including Leptospirosis, which can cause reproductive failure. Unlike systemic viruses such as Rabies or Canine Distemper, which primarily target neural pathways, Erysipelas is fundamentally a vascular and arthritic disease. Misdiagnosis is common if the veterinarian does not consider the specific environmental exposure history typical of swine housing.
Therapeutic Interventions and Herd Management
Antimicrobial Therapy Protocols
Penicillin remains the gold standard treatment for Erysipelas. Immediate administration of procaine penicillin G, either intramuscularly or via water medication for the entire herd, is required for effective control. Treatment efficacy drops significantly once the disease enters the chronic stage involving arthritis or vegetative valvular endocarditis.
Long-Term Management of Chronic Cases
Chronic cases result in severe limb deformities and persistent cardiac issues that generally do not respond to antibiotics. These animals should be culled for welfare reasons, as the inflammation of the synovial membranes causes extreme, irreversible pain. Proper sanitation and vaccine implementation are the only long-term safeguards against recurring outbreaks.
