Von Willebrand Disease is a genetic condition affecting how the body manages primary hemostasis. Unlike Hemophilia A, which involves deficiencies in specific clotting factors, vWD specifically impairs the function of platelets to bind to damaged blood vessels. This disruption in the coagulation cascade is permanent and requires lifelong management strategies.

Classifying the Genetic Deficiency

There are three distinct types of this disease: Type I, Type II, and Type III. Type I is the most prevalent form where vWF is present in reduced quantities. Living with a dog diagnosed with vWD requires a protective environment. Avoid medications that impair platelet function, such as aspirin.
