How It Works

Vancomycin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Specifically, it binds to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall precursor units, which prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains. This structural disruption causes the bacterial cell wall to become unstable, leading to cell lysis and death. Because this mechanism is highly targeted to the building blocks of Gram-positive bacteria, it does not directly interfere with the cell wall processes of animal cells, though it can still cause adverse physiological effects through other pathways.

Dosage

Dosage for Vancomycin is strictly calculated by a veterinarian based on the patient's weight, renal function, and the severity of the infection. There is no standard 'at-home' dosage, and it is administered in hospital settings via slow intravenous drip to prevent severe reactions.

Administration
