Understanding Fungal Infection: Nasal and Disseminated Aspergillosis
Aspergillosis is a fungal disease caused by common environmental molds. Unlike Histoplasmosis, which is typically contracted via soil ingestion in specific geographic regions, Aspergillosis is caused by ubiquitous spores that are inhaled. The infection manifests in two distinct clinical patterns: Sino-nasal Aspergillosis (SNA) and Disseminated Aspergillosis (DA). Understanding these differences is critical for determining the severity and prognosis for your pet.
The Pathology of Sino-nasal Aspergillosis
Sino-nasal Aspergillosis is the most common form in dogs. It begins when spores lodge in the nasal cavity. These fungi grow on the surface of the nasal mucosa, producing toxins that destroy the delicate nasal turbinate bones. This leads to chronic, painful inflammation. This condition is often confused with Pythiosis because both can cause persistent, non-healing tissue lesions, though the underlying organisms are entirely different.
Clinical Indicators of Nasal Involvement

Chronic unilateral or bilateral nasal discharge (mucus or blood).

Depigmentation of the nasal planum (the leather part of the nose).

Pain when the muzzle is touched.

Violent, repetitive sneezing.
The Gravity of Disseminated Aspergillosis
Disseminated Aspergillosis is a severe, systemic infection. It occurs when the fungus migrates from the respiratory system into the bloodstream. It often settles in the intervertebral discs, the kidneys, and the eyes. Because it behaves similarly to other systemic pathogens like Anaplasmosis in terms of causing general lethargy and fever, veterinarians must rely on advanced imaging to distinguish the two.
Systemic Warning Signs

Acute onset of lameness (often due to fungal osteomyelitis).

Neurological abnormalities, including ataxia or paralysis.

Ocular issues, such as uveitis or sudden vision loss.

Weight loss and extreme lethargy.
Diagnostic Protocols in Veterinary Medicine
Diagnosing aspergillosis requires a multi-step approach. Because this fungus does not always appear on routine bloodwork—unlike Canine Babesiosis—veterinarians utilize specific diagnostic imaging and invasive sampling. Computed Tomography (CT) scans are the gold standard for visualizing the destruction of nasal turbinates. In cases of systemic spread, abdominal ultrasound and spinal radiographs are essential to assess organ involvement. Biopsies of the nasal tissue or fine-needle aspirates of affected bones remain the definitive diagnostic method to visualize the fungal hyphae under a microscope.
Treatment Modalities and Therapeutic Goals
For localized nasal aspergillosis, the treatment of choice is the topical application of antifungal medication, such as clotrimazole, directly into the nasal sinuses under anesthesia. This "trephination" procedure allows the medication to reach every corner of the sinus cavity. For disseminated cases, systemic antifungal medications (e.g., itraconazole or voriconazole) are administered orally over many months. Unfortunately, unlike Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) where the focus is on management and containment, systemic aspergillosis has a much poorer prognosis, and treatment can be lifelong.
Long-Term Management and Prevention
Prevention is difficult because the Aspergillus fungus is everywhere. Maintaining a strong immune system through high-quality nutrition and minimizing exposure to heavy mold sources (like rotting vegetation or compost piles) is the best defense. Following treatment, routine check-ups are required to ensure the fungal load has not returned. If your dog has a history of immunosuppression or is a breed predisposed to respiratory sensitivities, monitor them closely for any changes in breathing or nasal hygiene.
