Elbow dysplasia is a systemic term used to describe a cluster of developmental joint diseases that affect the canine elbow. At its core, the condition is a failure of the developmental process within the complex anatomy of the elbow—the humerus, radius, and ulna. Unlike Patellar Luxation, which affects the stifle, elbow dysplasia is deeply rooted in the abnormal development of the cartilaginous surfaces that allow for smooth joint function.
Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD)

This is perhaps the most common component of elbow dysplasia, where the small piece of the ulna known as the coronoid process fractures or separates, causing ongoing irritation and bone remodeling.
Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP)
This condition occurs when the anconeal process—a small bony projection of the ulna—fails to fuse with the main shaft, creating a loose piece of bone that interferes with the mechanics of the joint.
Recognizing Clinical Manifestations and Lameness
Identifying elbow dysplasia early can prevent the rapid onset of debilitating Hip Dysplasia in Cats-like arthritic changes in the forelimbs. Owners should look for subtle changes in gait or activity. Early signs often include an intermittent limp that improves with rest but worsens after exercise.

This approach relies on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, and strict weight control. Keeping your pet at an ideal body condition score is the single most effective way to slow down the progression of the disease.
Surgical Solutions
