Overview
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors develop when these pacemaker cells undergo uncontrolled growth, often driven by specific genetic mutations in the KIT (c-kit) gene. These tumors can manifest anywhere along the digestive system, though they are most frequently identified in the cecum and large intestine of dogs. As they expand, GISTs can become locally invasive, potentially causing intestinal obstructions, ulcerations, or narrowing of the bowel, which significantly disrupts normal motility and digestive function.
Clinical presentation is often insidious, meaning symptoms may be subtle or absent in the early stages, leading to a diagnosis only after the tumor has grown significantly or caused complications. Because the symptoms closely mimic common digestive issues like chronic vomiting or weight loss, the condition is often advanced by the time it is detected. While GISTs have the potential to metastasize to regional lymph nodes, the liver, or the omentum, their biological behavior can be variable, with some cases responding well to intervention.

There are no specific known prevention strategies for GISTs, as they are largely driven by spontaneous genetic mutations, making routine veterinary wellness exams and prompt investigation of persistent digestive changes the best approach for early detection.
