Because the ovaries produce essential hormones, any disruption in cell growth can lead to profound systemic effects far beyond the mass itself.

Epithelial and Stromal Morphologies

The most frequent classifications include:

  • Epithelial Tumors: Often malignant (adenocarcinoma). These tend to spread to the omentum and abdominal wall.
  • Sex-Cord Stromal Tumors: Frequently hormone-secreting. This can lead to a condition known as estrogen toxicity.
  • Germ Cell Tumors: These often present as complex, solid, or cystic masses (teratomas).

Clinical Indicators of Ovarian Dysfunction

Identifying the condition early requires a keen eye on behavioral and physical changes. Owners often misattribute early symptoms to normal aging or mild weight gain.

Hormonal and Hematologic Manifestations

Dogs with hormone-secreting tumors may display signs of perpetual heat, such as vulvar swelling or bleeding, even in mature, previously asymptomatic dogs. If estrogen production is excessive, the dog may suffer from bone marrow hypoplasia, which leads to life-threatening anemia or thrombocytopenia. Monitoring for pale gums and lethargy is critical.

Mechanical and Abdominal Signs

As the mass grows, it exerts pressure on surrounding organs. You may notice:

  • Abdominal distension or asymmetry.
  • Difficulty urinating or defecating due to rectal or bladder compression.
  • Decreased appetite and exercise intolerance.
  • Generalized abdominal pain.

Diagnostic Approaches in Reproductive Oncology

Veterinarians use a multimodal approach to confirm the presence of ovarian masses. Initial physical examinations often involve thorough abdominal palpation to detect masses or fluid build-up. Imaging is the cornerstone of diagnosis. Abdominal ultrasound is highly sensitive for identifying ovarian origin and checking for metastasis to the liver or lymph nodes. Computed tomography (CT) may be necessary to assess the vascular supply of the tumor prior to surgical intervention. Complete blood counts are mandatory to evaluate if the tumor is impacting the blood cell production, especially in the presence of suspected hormone-secreting sex-cord tumors.

Surgical Intervention and Supportive Management

Ovariohysterectomy (spay) is the gold standard for treatment. Removal of both the affected and unaffected ovary, along with the uterus, is usually recommended to prevent recurrence or further hormonal complications. In cases where the tumor has metastasized, adjunctive chemotherapy or palliative care might be discussed. Similar to strategies used in Thyroid Carcinoma, the goal is to surgically reduce the tumor burden and manage the underlying endocrine or hematologic complications through supportive care, such as blood transfusions or hormone level regulation.

Because these tumors are rare in spayed dogs, the primary prevention strategy is an elective ovariohysterectomy performed early in life. Regular wellness check-ups are essential for geriatric intact females, as the incidence of reproductive tract tumors increases with age.
