Cats are masters of masking discomfort, and it is not until the heart can no longer compensate for the volume overload that owners typically observe changes. It is important to distinguish this from other developmental issues like Scottish Fold Osteochondrodysplasia, which carries its own specific orthopedic symptoms, or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which may affect connective tissue throughout the body including the heart valves.

Medications such as ACE inhibitors, diuretics to reduce fluid buildup, and pimobendan are standard. Routine monitoring of resting respiratory rates at home is the most vital tool for owners to assess the progression of the condition.
