Unlike conditions such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta, which specifically targets bone density, EDS primarily impacts the integumentary and musculoskeletal systems.
Types of Collagen Mutations
There are multiple identified forms of the syndrome, often classified by which step of the collagen processing chain is interrupted. Whether it is an issue with procollagen peptidase deficiency or abnormal amino acid substitution, the result is the same: tissue that is functionally weak. This weakness can lead to systemic issues, such as the potential development of Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia or other valvular abnormalities if the structural protein in the heart is compromised.
